Get Your Pots and Pans Ready, Canada

I don't think the Quebec protests are about tuition hikes.

They might have been at first, but not anymore.

I think that the Quebec government is the first of many North American governments that are powered by big business to finally hear the sound of the people.

And right now thousands of people all over the province are taking their pots and pans to the streets every night.

The clanging can just barely be heard in Ontario but it is sending shivers down a few spines at Queen's Park and in Ottawa, I'm sure.

This week Andrew Coyne, a reporter with the Montreal Gazette complained that, " a democratically elected government may be prevented by force and intimidation from enacting laws in the public interest...;

I'm guessing the protesters would say the laws are only in the interest of the wealthy.

Telling people that true change will happen at the ballot box is a lie.
When we vote we trade Tweedle Dum for Tweedle Dee.

To say I'm worried about the future would be an understatement.

i'm worried myself and have no answers. I worry about this 450 page Pandora's box, my provinces decline, how being worried about the environment all of a sudden becomes something radical and the list goes on. I disliked our previous liberal (provincial) government and now our conservative leaders are no better. Admittedly I would never vote conservative, but i'm at a loss of what or who the alternative is. I know i will watch and pay attention the next few years. I do sometimes wish i could just ignore it all though :(

By 450 page Pandors's box I'm guessing you are referring to the Federal "budget" that is so much more than a budget. That worries me too. I note that the cuts are to the most vulnerable - seniors, aboriginal women, the environment, etc etc. I'm reminded of that old Chinese curse "May you live in interesting times" when I see the global struggle for justce right now. Scary.

Yes, it's definitely down what we perceive to be the lesser of the two evils at the ballot box.

I don't know what's up with blogger's new word verification, but the pics are impossible to make out half the time. The robots are spoiling it for the rest of us.

It's hard to tell what the Quebec demos are about anymore. Everyone with a grievance is getting in on the act and the focus is getting rather diffuse. Sort of like the Occupy Movement. General malaise, I think.

Jane, if you want to start a public outcry against Blogger's word verification system, I'll with you on the barricades!

Yup, it's whatever is the lesser of two evils these days. The problem is: is there a lesser evil? I don't like our political choices at all. I think we need a complete overhaul with fresh choices, fresh ideas and fresh faces. You are so right about the cuts being mainly to the most vulnerable. My mother says that all the time since she feels it whenever it happens. And then she jokes and says "Well, they don't need us old people anymore, so why not pressure us and hope we die off." She says it as a joke, but it makes you wonder just how much truth there is in her statement.

I love to see the population taking action and making sure their voices are heard.
