Sunday Morning Thoughts on Whoring

A Vindication of the Rights of Whores

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford's niece, Krista Ford, recently came under fire for tweeting that women can avoid sexual assault and stay safe by not dressings like whores.

??

It seems to me there are two separate issues in that tweet.

The first one is staying safe.

Staying safe involves keeping away from dangerous places, avoiding questionable people, being prepared for emergencies when you are driving in your car, not being alone when walking around at night, etc. etc.

All the usual unfair stuff.

But staying safe doesn't have anything to do with what you are wearing.

You could be in your glorious bare nakedness

or in your favourite burka,

it wouldn't matter to a rapist.

Clothes don't cause rape.

The other issue has to do with how women are judged in our society.

The reason whores dress like whores is because they are in the business of selling their bodies not their minds.

Therefore if whoring is not how you put bread on the table then you need to get rid of those low riding shorts.

You know - the ones that show your tat.

Jeesh!

You want people to think that you are a mindless, cheap slut who gets on her knees for a toonie?

I assume your last question is rhetorical, LOL?

That woman just put a really nasty taste in my mouth. When people say stuff like that... it does something to my gut. How can you empower a criminal by saying that they are hurting people because "they are asking for it?" Stupid.

I should have included that she apologized, Magaly, but I try to keep my blogs short. I believe her apology was from the heart. It seems to be a common misunderstanding that is deeply engrained in our culture. I think we probably need to poke at it and make fun of it if things are to change.

It enrages me, we are still having this discussion... I think there is no apology that makes up for such a stupid, sexist, and down right disgusting comment. I guess that my aunt, who was raped by three men, when she was wearing overalls and was on her way to the inner city to teach young, poor children theater and arts, puts a damp in her argument.

My thoughts and prayers are with your aunt, Ana.

A victim is never, ever to blame. We should have been past that by now. Everyone has a right to feel, and to be, safe --- no matter what they're wearing.

I'm glad she apologized, Francie. Things can not be unsaid, but it is nice to know that she wishes she hadn't said those things. You are right about the "fun poking" they are some things that are so ugly that the only way they can be discussed is by throwing a bit of humor.

@Introverted Art - That is terrible about your aunt. I hope she has found some healing, and that the monsters were punished.

Ah but Martha the point is that whatever you wear you are as safe as you are ever going to be. The only difference clothing makes is that if you dress trashy people will judge you.

You are absolutely right, Francie. Sadly.
