Honk if You Still Love Quebec

They are at it again.

Yes the Parti Quebecois no sooner took power than they got rid of the Canadian flag in their legislature.

(Where it oughta stayed.)

I've blogged about this before and I haven't changed my mind.

I can't see why, in our wireless, computerized world, it would matter if Quebec goes or stays.

Figuratively speaking.

Literally they aren't going anyplace.

Suppose ten years down the line, they have another referendum, as they are promising that they will, and that time, the unthinkable happens.

What are we going to do?

Send in the army?

Put tanks on the streets of Montreal?

I can't imagine anyone wanting that.

We need to get over our hurt feelings.

If they decide to go, so be it.

And, my sorrowful, somewhat bitter friends,
that means making sure that they are financially able to manage independence.

Jeesh.

I wish I cared more.

Count me among the honkers. I do think it would be a huge mistake for Quebec to turn itself into an island of French in the North American anglo sea.

Canada would survive, I suspect, but we would be a much diminished country.

I've always supported Quebec's right to self-determination and independence. So if they want to go, they should go. They're not obliged to stay in the Canadian federation against their will. I'd be sad to see Quebec go, but c'est la vie.

However, if they do separate, they have to take 25% of the national debt with them. No reason why Canada should pay off their share of the debt while they depart with the assets it paid for.

Agreed Debra. And at this point, I say no concessions to Pauline Marois. If you are going, go.

I am in support of Quebec becoming their own country; have been for years. In fact, I think they should be a separate country. I was born and raised there and only moved to Kingston in 2009, so I have a pretty fair understanding of the politics. I also have a lot of discriminatory stories to tell (that also involved my kids) that I'm keeping to myself -- for now. Quebec left Canada a long time ago; they're part of the country only on paper. The apple cart might be upset for awhile if they leave, but I truly believe that everything will turn out fine in the end.

Interesting point of view Martha - especially from someone who lived there for so long. Culturally they are certainly self sufficient. I worry that finacially we may end up with a big problem. Also I worry that the fight to separate fairly may be our undoing. How much of the land that makes up the present province should they be all owed to claim. Debra has already mentioned the national debt. It won't be as easy if it gets to that point.

I wish I cared more too! I love Quebec, it's a wonderful place to visit, but I just don't get it :)

wow Francie, I did not know this was going on :P What a sad thing when a little bit of our country think they are superior, different, or whatever enough to want to separate...
